Eww, worms are so gross and slimy. While I don't have the heart to snag one on a fishing hook, I still don't want to handle it, unless if course it's with a game controller. Earthworm Jim, the platforming run 'n gun adventure that originally premiered on the SEGA Genesis in 1994 is making its big return via Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and the WiiWare and mobile devices.

Jim's latest owners, Interplay, have licensed the rights for releasing the classic to Gameloft. It's doubtful that this will be a direct port of the original as it's already available via the Wii Virtual Console, and as Gameloft specifically mentions WiiWare in their announcement, the Wii's downloadable service for new titles, its likely Jim will be added to the new fad of remixes/remakes.

The original Earthworm Jim told the story of a helpless little earthworm seeking refuge form a hungry bird by hiding out in a super space suit. The worm merges with the suit and becomes an alien blasting space hero and saves the galaxy. Jim is still considered one of the weirdest games of all time and let's hope it just keeps getting weirder.

No release date is set, but we do know that the new Earthworm Jim offering will be an exclusive to Xbox Live Arcade for a month, then unleased to the other systems. Keep checking back for more Earthworm Jim news as it wiggles its way to the surface.
